Even though experts say that the housing bubble is about to pop, the surge of first-time homeowners is not slowing down. As per Reuters’ update on the real estate market, almost 30% of all home sales in early 2022 were made by first-time homebuyers.

For many, this new milestone represents a fresh start rife with potential. However, before you can move into your hard-earned-dream home, there’s the important matter of moving in first. Since moving into a home isn't just about lugging in boxes, here’s how to do it right:

Hire movers with special services

Moving into your own home can be a lot more demanding than moving into a rental property because this usually means that you’re bringing more possessions.

As such, rather than taking on this responsibility solo, it’s a huge help to have professional movers onboard. Aside from helping you transport your items from point A to point B, an AskMoney guide to choosing movers explains that some companies even offer additional services. These include helping you pack and unpack, bringing special packing material, and offering off-site storage for extra items.

This can all be extremely useful especially if you’ve got a lot of things to move and you’re not quite sure how to arrange them in your new home. Just remember that when choosing a mover services rates can vary widely. Thus, if you’re not careful, you may end up paying more than you bargained for.??

Pack an essentials box separately

Moving in uses a lot more energy than expected, which is why many new homeowners are often too tired to unpack at the end of the day.

So that you won’t need to look through different boxes just to finish your day in comfort, it’s helpful to pack a separate box with essentials.

Listed among our “Tips for Buyers Moving In”, try packing a box labeled “unpack first” or “necessities”. In this box, you’ll want to have things like cleaning supplies, chargers, hygiene essentials, towels, and a change of clothes. This way, you can easily access your daily must-haves without needing to rummage through loads of boxes after an exhausting day.

Get ready to deep clean

Many properties will not be as clean as they seemed during viewing. Often this isn’t because the property owner or broker was irresponsible. Rather, it’s simply because it’s natural for a property to get a little dirty and dusty during move-in. After all, you’ve got furniture and boxes coming in from long travels and groups of people walking around. So, before you get fully settled in and start unpacking, do a good deep clean first.

In The Spruce’s tips for cleaning a new home, it’s important to deep clean areas with tiled surfaces like the bathroom and kitchen using disinfectant and a sponge as this is where dangerous bacteria can build up.

From here, you can clean the rest of your home with a brush and damp rag to remove dust. This way, you’re settling into a clean and comfy new home.

Consider early babyproofing

Many first-time homeowners are also young families with little kids. In these cases, it’s important to babyproof the house as soon as you move in to keep it safe for babies and toddlers. Otherwise, parents may be unpleasantly surprised by the many possible dangers young children can get into in a new house.

According to Parents.com’s rundown of babyproofing, it’s explained that making your house safer for your children is easiest to do while the house is still relatively undecorated and uncluttered.

For new properties, some of the first things to babyproof are outlets, cabinets, and windows. Since these are new, it’s important to check that there are no wires left out or frames with exposed nails.

Alternatively, for older properties, it’s important to check for chipping paint since it can be toxic. Any older built-ins should also be checked if they need mounting.

Even if you don’t have any kids, considering some babyproofing steps may still be helpful if you have pets that can just as easily hurt themselves.

Moving into your first home can be equal parts exhausting and exciting. To ensure it is more exciting than exhausting it’s important to be prepared for your move-in. By doing so, you’re starting your new life as a homeowner on the right foot.
