Odgen is the first suburb north of Wilmington, North Carolina, and a separate census-designated place. Referred to as "The 28411" by locals, Ogden is one of the fastest growing areas in greater Wilmington, as well as in New Hanover County.

In the 2010 census, the population was 6,766. Odgen is located between Wilmington's Middle Sound Loop area, the expansive gated community of Landfall, and Porter's Neck. Ogden is nestled between Business 17 (Market Street) and the Intracoastal. It is close to Figure Eight Island, with its stunning ocean-view luxury homes. Ogden's 4.8 square miles include a mixture of varied residential property, Intracoastal waterfront homes, extensive commercial, retail, and dining, and great parks.

In September 2021, a search for homes for sale in the zip code 28411 resulted in 66 listings. At the top end of the available homes is a $6.4 million gated estate with 260 feet of ICW frontage, on 6.7 acres. There are plenty of luxury homes in the Odgen area, with both new-built and classic, older brick houses. Other homes listed range from the 100s to much more modestly priced options. There is also a good supply of buildable lots for sale in Ogden.

Homes for sale in the Ogden area sell quickly, with their friendly residential neighborhoods, easy access to all of Cape Fear and the beaches, and great schools. Ogden North Carolina Weather

Summers are hot and humid in Ogden, and winters are short, cold, and windy. The temperature varies from an average low of 38 degrees to an average high of 88. The thermometer will rarely display temps below 26 degrees or above 94 degrees. On summer days when the sun is blazing and the humidity is high, the heat index can be just over 100 degrees.

Locals take refuge from stifling summer days with indoor air conditioning, or life on the water at any of the many marinas or public boat launches in the Ogden area.

Ogden Area Restaurants

I grew up in Wilmington, and have lived in the Ogden area for decades. If you live in Ogden, you are officially an "Ogdenites." One of my favorite places is The Ogden Tap Room, or to Ogdenites, "O'Tap." It's a locally-owned business. They have 46 taps and they're all different varieties. There is lots of entertainment (look on their website), plus wiffle ball leagues on Monday and Wednesday night.

Many of the awesome restaurants in Cape Fear, including the trendiest ones, are located in Ogden. Some of these are located in unassuming locations in small strip malls, and lots are situated along Market Street. Don't miss the international selection of restaurants, including the long-awaited second location of Double Happiness for Chinese food, Ogden Tap Room, and El Arriero Taqueria #1.

Ogden residents like to brag that one of their own - Cast Iron Kitchen - was prominently featured in Diners, Dives, and Drive-ins, in the episode "BBQ Bites and Southern Flavor," with a special nod to the Dirty South Biscuit (buttermilk fried chicken with sausage gravy, hot sauce, and a runny egg), and chef Josh Petty's signature "Not Your Mama's Meatloaf" served with herb aioli and spicy Hollandaise sauce. There are plenty of other great restaurants in Odgen, including Top Chef competitor Chef Keith Rhodes' Catch.

Ogden Close-up

Ogden is often cited as one of the best places to live in North Carolina. It's a beautiful area of the coast, just a 15-minute drive to the ocean, with schools that score high on greatschools.com, and everything you want in terms of shopping, dining, and entertainment within an easy drive via Market Street - it's only 15 minutes from the historic downtown of Wilmington.

The Market Street area has everything from dog day-care and the pick-your-own strawberry fields of Lewis Strawberry Farm & Nursery. The huge variety of retail and service offerings in Ogden draw shoppers from all of New Hanover County.

Local Attractions

Ogden offers up great suburban living, with plenty of outdoor activities and the usual family-oriented businesses and entertainment, too. Check out the Ogden Dog Park in the middle of a beautiful park with extensive walking trails, tennis court, picnic areas, and playgrounds. There is a YMCA, as well as DEFY amusement center, Cardinal bowling, Jungle Rapids, and The Expedition Organization for canoe and kayak tours.

Carolina Girl Gardens on Market Street offers a wide variety of plants and flowers - and now gourds and pumpkins for fall decorating. Not many people who arrive in Wilmington realize that we have an ice rink, Wilmington Ice House. If you are from the north and love to play hockey or figure skate then you haven't left it behind.
