What's Up: Protect Coastal Plants from a Cold Snap

The average December temperatures in Wilmington and the surrounding areas are a high of 59 degrees and low of 47. But there are nights when a freeze rolls into the Cape Fear. The cold season last for almost three months, from December 4 to March 2. Wilmington averages 37 frosty nights a year. So what do you need to do to protect garden plants on those rare freezing nights?

  • Bring potted plants into your garage or Carolina room
  • Cover plants with a lightweight blanket or sheet
  • Invest in reusable drawstring plant covers
  • Don't cover plants with plastic tarp or garbage bags
  • Water plants at the ground to insulate roots and prevent frost damage
