Called a "sun room" in northern states, a lanai or Florida room in the sunshine state, and an Arizona room out west, this wonderfully functional and flexible space is affectionately called a Carolina room across the Carolinas. Carolina rooms are often at the top of a house hunting wish-list, offering flexible space, and expanding living and entertaining options in a home. The primary objective of a Carolina room is to allow abundant daylight into a home, and to provide multi-sided views of landscaping and outdoor features, all while providing shelter from both the weather.

A Carolina room is generally included in a house's square footage. It may be completed screened, with a roof - a step above a covered patio - or a finished room with sliding doors, French doors, and wall-to-wall windows. A Carolina room built as an attachment to the main house, or is integrated into the primary residence, often connected to the house with doors that can be kept open when the weather is mild.
Carolina rooms are usually not heated or cooled by the house's central system, but most have ceiling fans, and some have electric heating units to help take the chill off southeastern coastal winter evenings.
Whether you use this "outdoor room" as a dining space, artist's studio, casual family room, or a quiet reading spot, a Carolina room calls for furniture and fabrics that are suitable for use indoors or outdoors. If a Carolina room has wall-to-wall windows, a system of shades helps provide relief from too much sun.
