Shawn Robert, Broker, has joined KBT Realty Group as an agent specializing in commercial brokerage with the newly formed KBT Commercial, a division of KBT Realty Group - Keller Williams INNOVATE.

Meet Shawn Roberts

Hi, I'm Shawn Roberts. I'm a commercial broker with KBT Commercial Realty in Wilmington, North Carolina.

I transitioned into commercial real estate because I really have a love for the business planning process. I was trying to open a restaurant, and I was trying to get people to invest in me by walking down the street and giving out business plans and pitching them on the spot with menus. And that just seemed like the most sensible way for me to talk to the most people about my business idea.

And a lot of the people that were willing to hear me out, and listen to me more, were real estate brokers, and they said, you have a talent here that you're not seeing, and maybe we should talk about that talent.

So it's real estate that kind of showed me what I'm better at. And when I was looking to open a restaurant, it felt like my only option, whereas now I get to do that whole business planning process over and over again, and I really love it. I really love sitting down and writing business plans and going over costs, figuring out what our assumptions are, what we have to do to make everything work out well.

I'm from New Jersey and I've lived all over the East Coast, so I've seen coastal Maine and Southern Florida and Massachusetts, and I came here because it seemed to offer the best mixture of everything, and it seemed like a place where I wanted to make sure to add to the community, helping local businesses find their niches.

I love to see people who have a passion for an idea and they're willing to put everything behind it, and they go and find a space, and they want to build their dream. They want to build a neighborhood.

I serve clients between Southport and Topsail Island, and I'm even going down to Bald Head Island to show some property next week. I go as far north as necessary, but with a variety of clients in a variety of industries, I may show a warehouse one week and a coffee shop downtown the next week and a plot of land with nothing but trees the day after and have to figure out which location is best for that business.

People give me a menu of what they're looking for, and I go and find it. So, I can take a piece of property from raw land, or a building that needs to be demolished and walk through the financial planning process from what it is now to what it's going to be later. And for builders, that can be me looking for a plot of land that can hold enough homes for what their goals are. And for someone who wants to have a warehouse space of their own but wants to be a landlord to other people of the same business or people with similar businesses, finding them the space where the zoning works.

I take what people are really looking for, and I go, okay, what is the best way to get there?

I cook. I cook a lot more at home now than I used to, and I get to cook for the people that are my friends and my family now. And I have time to play with my dog. Actually, I'm probably with my dog the majority of the time I'm off. I walk around and I take pictures of things and I thrift shop and I antique shop.
